For Immigration Attorneys ·
What you'll accomplish
After a consultation you have rough notes, and the file needs a summary in the same shape every time. A Gemini Gem keeps your instructions in front of every future chat, including the rule that matters most: summarize only what the notes say and add nothing. You paste notes, the Gem returns fixed headings, and you compare it with your notes line by line before it goes in the file.
Note on Gems. Google is replacing Gems with skills. Its help page says Gems transition to skills in Gemini Apps starting in November 2026 for personal Google Accounts and in 2027 for work and school accounts, and that existing Gems are recreated as skills automatically. The instructions you write here carry over. Menu names may change.
What you'll need
Data caution. Consultation notes hold exactly what your firm must protect: client names, A-numbers, receipt numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, addresses, immigration and criminal history, family details and the client's own account. These stay in your firm's approved systems. This setup works with invented notes and matter codes such as "Client A" and "IM-26-031". Asylum, trafficking, abuse and criminal history details never go into a consumer AI tool. Before real notes go into any Gem, confirm your firm approved Gemini for client data under your confidentiality duties and your state bar's rules on AI use, which you check yourself. Then check Gemini's data settings for whether chats are used to improve Google's models and how long activity is kept, because personal and work accounts can differ.
What you should see: A form with a name, a place for instructions and sometimes a place for files. Troubleshooting: Google's page about the Gems-to-skills change says that from November 2026 the sidebar for personal accounts shows skills instead. If you see Skills under Settings, create the same instructions there using the option to create manually.
Type "Consultation Notes to File Summary (practice)".
Paste this text into the instructions box.
You turn an attorney's rough consultation notes into a file summary. Use only the notes pasted in the current chat.
Write under these headings, in this order: Who attended. Facts as the client stated them. Documents mentioned. Questions raised. Next steps the attorney named.
Do not add any fact, date, reason or detail that is not in the notes. Do not interpret the notes. Do not state any law, form, fee, deadline, option, eligibility view or outcome.
Where the notes are unclear or silent, write "unclear in notes".
Quote the notes in quotation marks wherever you can.
End with a heading "Questions for the attorney" and list gaps and unclear points as questions.
Label every output "Draft for attorney review".
What you should see: The instructions saved in the Gem's form. Troubleshooting: If the box has a character limit, shorten the wording but keep the rules about adding nothing and writing "unclear in notes".
What you should see: A chat window titled with the Gem's name.
Paste the practice notes from the next section into the chat and send them.
Use each inside the Gem, with notes pasted in the chat.
